Lesson Framework

Newton's Laws of Motion

Lesson Overview

Analyzing the effect of forces on the motion of objects is the foundation of Newton’s 3 Laws. Students will studyand evaluate inertia in order to better understand Newton’s 1st Law. Students will analyze the relationship betweenforce, mass, and acceleration in order to evaluate Newton’s 2nd Law. Finally students will discuss the relationship between an action-reaction pair in order to provide real life examples of Newton’s 3rd Law. Students will evaluate Newton’s 3 Laws by completing a station lab. This will be followed during the explain portion of the lesson using an interactive flipchart. Students will then engineer a water rocket using principles connected to Newton’s Three Laws to launch the rocket. For the environmental stewardship project students will evaluate the carbon footprint of their communities’ public transportation and propose some alternatives to reduce this carbon footprint. Students will extend their learning using a Phet simulation to further analyze Newton’s Laws. Finally, students will complete a Kahoot assessment and a self-assessment to check their own progress. The water rocket rubric will be used a summative assessment.
