Lesson Framework

Magnets

Lesson Overview

In this lesson, students will observe a video of magnets interacting and construct questions based on their observations. Students will then use a graphic organizer to plan and carry out an investigation in the Explore portion of the investigation. Students will read provided and other informational text about magnets in the Explain. To support their readings, students will use their investigation data with their summaries to construct an explanation. Students will evaluate implications for recycling magnets for their environmental stewardship project. To extend their learning students will analyze specific materials to explain how much water, glass, and wood impede the strength of a magnet on metal paper clips. Students will complete a Kahoot! Quiz to check their basic understanding of magnetism and a formal lab report for their investigation alongside their explanations. The teacher will use the GRC Rubric to grade the formal report. The teacher may reteach using a group card sort activity and/or an individual remediation using a guided reading activity from CK-12. This lesson should be completed before S5P3.a which covers the uses and differences between a magnet and an electromagnet. The magnetism lessons should be completed after the electricity cluster of standards (i.e. S5P2.a-c) in order to accurately teach about electromagnets.
